Study links 50,000 European deaths to summer heat

A study found summer heat caused about 50,000 deaths in Europe and cut GDP by €17 billion. Almost two-thirds of the deaths would not have happened without climate change, the researchers said.

Why it matters: Heat waves are costing lives and money, adding pressure on health systems and climate policy.

Record fuel prices speed Europe's shift to electric cars

Total car sales in Europe rose 10.2% year on year in September, data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association showed. Record gasoline and diesel prices are accelerating purchases of electric and hybrid vehicles, while registrations of conventional cars fell by double digits in key markets.

Why it matters: Faster electric vehicle adoption reduces European demand for imported oil.
