Every shallow-water coral reef ecosystem in Australia faces a very high risk of collapse by 2075, a global assessment found. Projected ocean warming is the main driver. The authors said drastic action is needed to avoid that outcome.
Why it matters: Reef loss would hurt fisheries, tourism and coastal protection for millions of people.
In its first global assessment of coral reefs, the IUCN classified 96% of reef systems across 80 countries as critically endangered, at high risk of ecosystem collapse before 2075 because of global heating. The assessment includes Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and scientists described the findings as a wake-up call.
Why it matters: Reefs support fisheries, coastal protection and tourism for hundreds of millions of people.
